Book Voyager
How can we cater to book lovers on-the-go?
The BOOK VOYAGER is a portable book stand designed for readers on the move. With elegantly crisscrossing panels that securely hold your book, it can transform any setting into a reading haven. When you need to move, the Book Voyager seamlessly flat-packs into a portable sleeve, ensuring that your favorite stories are always by your side.
In partnership with Kikkerland and Barnes & Noble, I was tasked with designing something that catered to book lovers.
Initial Ideation
Research was conducted online and in person to assess what both companies already had to offer and the needs of the target consumer. After ideation, the collapsible book stand concept was chosen for its ingenuity.
Prototyping
Through further prototyping, the materials and functionality were refined, as well as perfecting the physics of the object.
A laser cutting pattern was designed to create a sleeve that was both flexible and sturdy at the same time.
Elastic bands were added to hold the pages and magnets were added to stabilize the cross panels when they are not being used.
Presentation
The final presentation took place at Barnes & Noble Union Square. A jury of Kikkerland designer, Barnes & Noble marketing team, Jan Van Der Lande (CEO and founder of Kikkerland), and James Daunt (CEO of Barnes & Noble) watched the presentation and decided on the winner of Kikkerland and Barnes & Noble Design Challenge 2024.
The Book Voyager was chosen by Kikkerland and Barnes and Noble to go into production and be sold at stores nation wide (Unites States).
Further Development
Working with Kikkerland designers the materials were changed to fit the brand aesthetic.
3D models and tech drawings were developed to send to factories.
